High thermal tolerance does not protect from chronic warming – A multiple end-point approach using a tropical gastropod, Stramonita haemastoma

open access: yesEcological Indicators, 2018
Abstract Animal physiology and ecology are affected by increasing environmental temperatures, and this is particularly relevant in the tropics, where organisms are already living on the warm edge of their thermal windows. Here, we present data on sub-lethal effects of temperature (using molecular biomarkers), thermal tolerance, warming safety margins

Organotin pollution from pleasure craft at Paraty, a tourist area of Southeastern Brazil: amelioration or interference?

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Oceanography
Some organotin compounds, such as TBT, are endocrine disruptors and harm marine ecosystems. Even after the global ban on organotins, increasing imposex levels have been detected in Stramonita haemastoma analyzed in 2004 and 2011 in some locations at ...

Shell occupation by the South Atlantic endemic hermit crab Loxopagurus loxochelis (Moreira, 1901) (Anomura: Diogenidae)

open access: yesNauplius
The evaluation of population characteristics, particularly those of endemic species, aids in population preservation and management. Hermit crabs present an innate behavior of occupying shells, which tends to individual needs and limits their ...

Barriers to gene flow in the Western Mediterranean basin : Study of the genetic differentiation in two marine molluscs, Mytilus galloprovincialis & Stramonita haemastoma,

open access: yes, 2015
La génétique des populations a révélé que la diversité génétique des espèces marines était très souvent distribuée de façon discrète dans l’espace, en mosaïque de patchs populationnels génétiquement homogènes délimités par des discontinuités appelées barrière au flux génique.

Sex steroid imbalances in the muricid Stramonita haemastoma from TBT contaminated sites

Environmental Science and Pollution Research, 2016
Imposex incidence, organotin tissue levels, and sex steroid (free and esterified testosterone and estradiol) levels were assessed in Stramonita haemastoma from Babitonga Bay (Santa Catarina State, Southern Brazil). The imposex levels showed a reduction when compared to a previous evaluation performed in the same area.

Ocular tentacle regeneration and associated malformations in Stramonita haemastoma (Gastropoda: Muricidae)

Hydrobiologia, 2017
The present study aimed to elucidate the causal factor of tentacular malformations observed in Stramonita haemastoma. For this purpose, an annual, spatial and interspecific survey of the tentacular malformations was conducted in addition to the experimental semi-amputation of the tentacles of S. haemastoma.

Local consumers are the first line to control biological invasions: a case of study with the whelk Stramonita haemastoma (Gastropoda: Muricidae)

Hydrobiologia, 2016
The increasing spread of invasive species in the Mediterranean Sea determines several alterations in local food webs, changing the feeding habits of native organisms. The whelk Stramonita haemastoma is a widespread Mediterranean gastropod that consumes bivalves, barnacles and limpets.

Spawning and intracapsular development ofStramonita haemastoma haemastoma(Gastropoda: Muricidae) collected in northern Tunisia

Marine Biology Research, 2011
Abstract Spawning and intracapsular development were studied in a Tunisian population of the rocky marine snail Stramonita haemastoma haemastoma. Spawning in aquaria occurred from late May until mid June. Females deposited between 20 and 86 egg capsules containing 1724–6956 eggs ranging between 60 and 75 µm in diameter.
