It's a Strange, Strange, Strange, Strange World
Information Systems Security, 2000Abstract A lot has happened in our world since last we met. The FBI is under siege for its Carnivore system, Verizon, confronted with a security hole that allowed access to customer data fixed it, but really didn't. A new flavor of the Love Bug bit, and a new back-door Trojan hit the streets. Law enforcement started recruiting hackers.

This article reexamines Alfred Schutz’s famous 1944 Stranger essay and the initial criticism of Aron Gurwitsch. I side with Schutz in thinking of the refugee as a special type of stranger. Then to respond to the charge that the essay is not philosophical enough from Gurwitsch, I read Schutz’s notion of the strange with Husserl’s notion of homeworld and

Physics The so-called strange metal phase appears in the phase diagrams of many quantum materials, including cuprate high-temperature superconductors and heavy fermion compounds. Strange metals frequently occur in the vicinity of antiferromagnetism, suggesting a connection between the two. Now, Shen et al .

Measuring the strangeness of strange attractors
Physica D: Nonlinear Phenomena, 1983The authors consider the question of which observables may be effectively used to distinguish chaos and random noise in a dynamical system possessing a strange attractor. After briefly reviewing some such quantities (fractal dimension, Lyapunov exponents information entropy), the authors suggest another such measure, the correlation exponent.

v1.6 We review the theory and observational status of strange-pulsar models. After introduction of the subject, a summary of observational facts about pulsars is presented. The theory of quark matter and strange matter relevant to astrophysical applications is briefly discussed, and applied afterwards to type-II supernova theory and to pulsar models ...

Examples have been given by Abraham-Smale [1], Shub [1], and Newhouse [2] of diffeomorphisms on a compact manifold which are not in the closure of diffeomorphisms satisfying Smale’s Axiom A or in the closure of the set of Ω-stable diffeomorphisms (Smale [1]).

“Strange Elation” and a Strange Relation
2020While Gerard Manley Hopkins—a supporter of British imperialism who did not engage with issues surrounding colonialism, slavery, or race—might seem a surprising model for post-colonial writers, he has in fact generated powerful responses in Caribbean poets through his playful rhythmic sensibility, attunement to individuality, religious faith, and ...
