In December 1993, serious riots erupted in Santiago del Estero and La Rioja, Argentina, when thousands of public workers protested against economic adjustment measures and government corruption. The workers had not been paid since the previous July and had just learned that provincial government officials had granted themselves a generous raise.

In the early 1980s Montgomery Ward, one of the most renowned names in American retailing, was showing large losses. Its historic emphasis on mail order had long since failed and its merchandising policy had become unfocussed. In 1985 they set about “revamping” the entire group.
