Holes and Entrainment in Stratocumulus
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 2005Abstract Aircraft flights through stratocumulus clouds (Sc) during the Dynamics and Chemistry of Marine Stratocumulus II (DYCOMS-II) study off the California coast found narrow in-cloud regions with less liquid water content (LWC) and cooler temperatures than average background values. The regions are named cloud holes and are assumed to

The Stratocumulus Nature of Fog
Journal of Climate and Applied Meteorology, 1986Landsat MSS and TM digital data on fog cell size distribution, cell aspect ratio, and cell orientation angle were analyzed for three high inversion radiation fogs in central California and on advection fog in eastern South Dakota. The results indicate that (1) fogs, being composed of individual cellular structures, are stratocumulus in nature; (2) the ...

Orographic Influences on Subtropical Stratocumulus
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 2006Abstract The impact of South American orography on subtropical stratocumulus clouds off the Peruvian coast is investigated in the context of an atmospheric general circulation model. It is found that stratocumulus incidence is significantly reduced when South American orography is removed.

Abstract Chapter 6 provides an overview of the dynamics of fogs and stratocumulus clouds. Included are fog formation mechanisms and various forcing factors that influence fog occurrence and intensity. Likewise factors influencing boundary layer cloud occurrence and intensity are reviewed along with discussions of models used to describe and predict ...

The Atlantic Stratocumulus Transition Experiment—ASTEX
Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, 1995The Atlantic Stratocumulus Experiment (ASTEX) was conducted over the northeast Atlantic Ocean during June 1992 with substantial international collaboration. The main goal of ASTEX was to study the climatologically important transition between solid stratocumulus and subtropical trade cumulus cloud regimes using island, aircraft, ship, and satellite ...

Drizzle and Turbulence Below Closed Cellular Marine Stratocumulus Clouds
Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 2019Drizzle is ubiquitous in marine boundary layer stratocumulus clouds with much of it evaporating before reaching the surface. Ten days of observations made at the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement's Eastern North Atlantic site during closed cellular ...

Observations of stratocumulus cloud break-up over land
Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, 1999AbstractDetailed measurements were made during three episodes of boundary‐layer stratocumulus clouds occumng at Cardington, Bedfordshire, UK, using the UK Meteorological Oftice tethered‐balloon system. no cases were of cloud which dispersed or partly dispersed during the day, and the other was of persistent cloud.

Dynamics and Microphysics in Marine Stratocumulus
2007Abstract : The Dynamics and Microphysics in Marine Stratocumulus (DMIMS) project encompasses two distinct overarching goals: (1) Examination of the structure and forcing of a Coastally Trapped Wind Reversal (CTWR) and (2) Examination of the role of mesoscale organization in marine stratocumulus and the interplay between cloud-microphysical processes ...
