Schumann resonances observed with a balloon in the stratosphere

Journal of Atmospheric and Terrestrial Physics, 1979
Abstract The electric vertical component of natural ELF noise has been measured with a balloon at two different altitudes, 20 and 26 km in the stratosphere for about 1 day on 3–4 October 1977 over the Pacific Ocean. Observations of high S N -ratio Schumann resonances were detected up to the 7th mode (44.9 Hz) but no higher mode could be ...

An update of the CNES stratospheric balloon activities

2023
For nearly 60 years, the French Centre National d Etudes Spatiales (CNES) has been developing and operating stratospheric balloons to perform scientific measurements and technological tests in the upper atmosphere up to 40 km in altitude. To date, CNES operation teams have operated more than 4,000 flights at all latitudes.

Coverage and performance of stratospheric balloons wireless networks

2016 IEEE 27th Annual International Symposium on Personal, Indoor, and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC), 2016
In this paper we analyze the performance of wireless networks by using stratospheric balloons equipped by base stations (BS). We show that such a solution can be interesting in terms of performance and coverage. Considering a high altitude wireless network, we first establish an analytical expression of the Signal to Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR)

Carrier Balloon Trajectories in the Stratosphere

Journal of Applied Meteorology, 1980
Abstract The need for atmospheric sounding data between the surface and 30 mb for the Global Weather Experiment prompted the development of the Carrier Balloon System. During the development period, 23 constant-level balloon flights near 24 km were conducted. The wind trajectories from these flights are described.

Software and methodologies for stratospheric balloons

2003
Since the 1999, experts of ISTI (an Institute of the Italian National Research Council) collaborate with ASI (the Italian Space Agency) on the flight dynamic of the Stratospheric Balloons (pre-operation and operation activities included). The latest developments on Subsystems and methodologies for flight prediction will be discussed.
