International stage stratotypes

1996
All of the Upper Carboniferous stages in the so-called ‘Heerlen Classification’, from the Chokierian to the Bolsovian, have their base stratotypes in northern England (the Westphalian D base stratotype has yet to be selected, although sites in South Wales will probably be strong contenders).

Problems in chronostratigraphy: stages, series, unit and boundary stratotypes, global stratotype section and point and tarnished golden spikes

Earth-Science Reviews, 1999
Abstract Stratigraphy is a magnificent subject—magnificent in its breadth and scope, magnificent in its importance to so many lines of human endeavor. It is essentially that branch of geology which deals with the arrangement, the distribution, and the chronological succession of rock strata (and other associated rock bodies), with respect to any or

Stratotypes and an International Geochronologic Scale

1978
An international geochronologic scale is needed in order to provide a single universal standard of reference for dating rock strata, or events recorded in rock strata, anywhere in the world. There are many possible means of relating rock strata and the geologic events they record to the passage of time--physical relations of strata (law of ...

Chapter A5 Langhian, serravallian, and tortonian historical stratotypes

1995
Publisher Summary This chapter discusses Langhian, Serravallian, and Tortonian historical stratotypes. Chronostratigraphy does represent a basic common language of communication in Earth Sciences. However, most chronostratigraphic units of the standard Geologic Time Scale lack an appropriate and rigid definition in the rock stratigraphic record ...
