Streams in the Wilderness [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Miranda Beale analyzes two award-winning novels by Marilynne Robinson, Gilead (2004) and Home (2008), identifying their major themes as the necessity of balancing parental responsibility and God\u27s loving guidance and redemptive power in raising ...

The Realization of Multidirectional, Free‐Standing 3D Plasmonic Nanostructures via 3D Nanoprinting: A Case Study of Fractal Antennas

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Free‐standing plasmonic gold‐based fractal antennas are fabricated by 3D nanoprinting, employing focused electron beam induced deposition and an optimized purification method to remove carbon while conserving structural fidelity. Simulation and experiment show broadband plasmonic activity, including customizable polarizability, thereby paving the way ...

Peptide Sequencing With Single Acid Resolution Using a Sub‐Nanometer Diameter Pore

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
To sequence a single molecule of Aβ1−42–sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), the aggregate is forced through a sub‐nanopore 0.4 nm in diameter spanning a 4.0 nm thick membrane. The figure is a visual molecular dynamics (VMD) snapshot depicting the translocation of Aβ1−42–SDS through the pore; only the peptide, the SDS, the Na+ (yellow/green) and Cl− (cyan ...

Detecting Mowed Tidal Wetlands Using Time-Series NDVI and LSTM-Based Machine Learning

open access: yesLand
This study presents the first application of machine learning (ML) to detect and map mowed tidal wetlands in the Chesapeake Bay region of Maryland and Virginia, focusing on emergent estuarine intertidal (E2EM) wetlands. Monitoring human disturbances like

Coinductive Streams in Monoidal Categories [PDF]

open access: yesLogical Methods in Computer Science
We introduce monoidal streams. Monoidal streams are a generalization of causal stream functions, which can be defined in cartesian monoidal categories, to arbitrary symmetric monoidal categories. In the same way that streams provide semantics to dataflow

New meteor showers identified in the CAMS and SonotaCo meteoroid orbit surveys

open access: yes, 2013
A cluster analysis was applied to the combined meteoroid orbit database derived from low-light level video observations by the SonotaCo consortium in Japan (64,650 meteors observed between 2007 and 2009) and by the Cameras for All-sky Meteor Surveillance

Expressive Stream Reasoning with Laser

open access: yes, 2017
An increasing number of use cases require a timely extraction of non-trivial knowledge from semantically annotated data streams, especially on the Web and for the Internet of Things (IoT).

High‐Spatiotemporal‐Resolution Transparent Thermoelectric Temperature Sensor Arrays Reveal Temperature‐Dependent Windows for Reversible Photothermal Neuromodulation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Thermoelectric temperature sensors are developed that directly measure heat changes during optical‐based neural stimulation with millisecond precision. The sensors reveal the temperature windows for safe reversible neural modulation: 1.4–4.5 °C enables reversible neural inhibition, while temperatures above 6.1 °C cause permanent thermal damage.

Spatially Resolved Click Patterning of Dyes on Graphene for 2D Hybrids with Regiotunable Fluorescence

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Well‐structured graphene hybrid architectures featuring spatially resolved fluorescent properties represent a promising but so‐far elusive synthetic target. A robust and straightforward method for fabricating well‐organized graphene‐dye hybrid nanoassemblies through a combination of reductive patterning and conventional click chemistry is presented ...

Contrasting effects of agriculture and urban land use on macroinvertebrate secondary production in Neotropical streams

open access: yesEcological Indicators
We compared the structural and functional attributes of Neotropical macroinvertebrate communities between two natural, two agricultural, and two urban streams.
