Phylogenetic analyses reveal bat communities in Northwestern Mexico harbor a high diversity of novel cryptic ectoparasite species. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol, 2023
Parasites are integral parts of the ecosystem. Using phylogenetic techniques, we found multiple novel lineages of bat bugs, flies, and ticks in Northwestern Mexico. For some ectoparasite species, haplotype distribution may reflect patterns of bat dispersal.

Morphological and molecular data on the bat flies, Basilia silvae (Brèthes, 1913) and Trichobius parasiticus Gervais, 1844 parasitizing Chilean bats. [PDF]

open access: yesMed Vet Entomol
We determined morphological and molecularly two species of bat flies: T. parasiticus (Streblidae), and B. silvae (Nycteribiidae). We generated the first sequences for both species in the country for the cytochrome oxidase subunit I. We do recover monophyletic groups for both species, and we discussed the tree topology.

Molecular Detection and Isolation of Bartonella Species in Bats and Their Ectoparasites Along the China-Myanmar Border. [PDF]

open access: yesTransbound Emerg Dis
Bartonella are parasitic pathogens that infect many mammals, including humans, and cause significant diseases. This study investigates the presence, genetic diversity, and tissue tropism of Bartonella in bats and their ectoparasites along the China–Myanmar border. Bats and ectoparasites were collected from Yingjiang, Ruili, and Gengma Counties.

Study of Mitogenomes Provides Implications for the Phylogenetics and Evolution of the Infraorder Muscomorpha in Diptera. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
This study comparatively analyzed the mitogenome characteristics of 131 species that represent 18 superfamilies in Muscomorpha, in which mitogenomes of 16 species are newly sequenced and annotated herein. Further, we deduced their phylogenetics using maximum likelihood, and discussed their divergence time and evolution combined with taxonomy and ...

Comparative Community Ecology Reveals Conserved Ectoparasite Microbiomes Amidst Variable Host and Environment Microbiomes. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
Our results indicate that ectoparasite microbiomes are highly conserved and specific. In contrast, we found high geographic variation in host and environmental microbiomes, suggesting that there may be a constraint on blood‐feeding insect ectoparasites to maintain a specific microbiome.

Gastrointestinal Parasites of Zoonotic Importance Detected in Bats in the Conservation Area of Semuliki National Park, Western Uganda. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Parasitol Res
Bat guano may contain zoonotic parasites that contaminate the environment and/or serve as a potential source of infection to humans and animals. Repeated bat–human exposure could be a risk factor for zoonosis. To date, knowledge on the status of bat gastrointestinal parasites (GIPs) in Uganda is limited.

Bat Flies of the Family Streblidae (Diptera: Hippoboscoidea) Host Relatives of Medically and Agriculturally Important “Bat-Associated” Viruses

open access: yesViruses, 2021
Bat flies (Hippoboscoidea: Nycteribiidae and Streblidae) are obligate hematophagous ectoparasites of bats. We collected streblid bat flies from the New World (México) and the Old World (Uganda), and used metagenomics to identify their viruses. In México,

Ectoparasites (Diptera, Hemiptera and Siphonaptera) of bats (Chiroptera) in northeastern Argentina

open access: yesRevista Chilena de Entomología, 2023
New information is presented regarding bats and their ectoparasite insects in the Esteros del Iberá ecoregion, Corrientes, Argentina. The aim of this study was to explore the diversity of ectoparasite species found on bats in northeastern
