Investigating Anthropogenic and Social Influences on Diet of Semi‐Urban Vervet Monkeys Using DNA Metabarcoding [PDF]
We used eDNA metabarcoding of faecal samples to quantify the dietary composition of two vervet monkey populations in a semi‐urban environment in South Africa over a 4‐month period, and compared these results with visual observations. We found that both methods yielded similar results, but eDNA metabarcoding revealed a greater diversity of consumed taxa.

Biosilicification in monocots: Comparative analysis highlights contrasting patterns of deposition [PDF]
Abstract Premise New insights into biomineral uptake and sequestration are important for understanding how plants grow. Some plants accumulate silica accretions in precise locations in particular cells. Among monocots, controlled biosilicification occurs in several different forms and is restricted to commelinids and orchids. Methods We utilized energy‐

An Old World leaf‐cutting, fungus‐growing ant: A case of convergent evolution [PDF]
Crematogaster clariventris, a myrmicine ant from the African subgenus Atopogyne, is a defoliator that uses vegetal material to grow fungi as do higher New World leaf‐cutting Attina, illustrating a case of convergent evolution. However, C. clariventris grows fungal mycelia to reinforce the carton of the nests rather than cultivating it for food ...

Pest categorisation of Milviscutulus mangiferae
Abstract The EFSA Panel on Plant Health performed a pest categorisation of Milviscutulus mangiferae (Hemiptera: Sternorrhyncha: Coccidae), the mango shield scale, for the EU. The native range of M. mangiferae is uncertain. This species occurs widely in tropical and warmer subtropical regions throughout the world.

African elephants and meso‐browsers exert substantial top‐down control over the vegetation in African savannas, but their effect on structural relationships in trees remains understudied. Using data collected for more than 3500 trees, we found that 20 years of increasing elephant population reduces tree height and the logged initial growth rate of the ...
