In vitro micropropagation of bird of paradise (Strelitzia reginae Ait.), an important commercial ornamental plant, has been studied here. Rhizomes collected from established mother plant were used as explants for establishment of culture on MS medium supplemented with plant growth regulators (PGR), 3% sucrose and gelled with 0.8% agar.

In the dehiscent anthers of Strelitzia reginae Ait. thread–like formations occur among the pollen grains. The threads are derived from specialized epidermal cells in the stomium region. These cells are liberated from the normal epidermal cells and from each other along their radial walls.
