Strengthening mechanism of ω-Zr
Computational Materials Science, 2017Abstract The ω-zirconium (ω-Zr) is generally considered as the favorable strengthening phase in the application of Zr and its alloys. However, the intrinsic mechanism is still unclear. In this study, the elastic constants and anisotropic ideal shear strengths of ω-Zr and the common α-Zr phase are systematically studied by the first-principle ...

Strength and Strengthening Mechanisms
1984The strength of a material depends on various intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Although the most important is the chemical composition, the properties can be manipulated by altering the structure. Various mechanical, thermal, and surface treatments are used to create the desired balance of strength, hardness, and ductility.

Strengthening mechanisms in bainitic steels
Acta Metallurgica, 1971Abstract An investigation has been made of the microstructures and mechanical properties of a series of 1%Cr-0.5 %Mo-0.002%B base steels following isothermal transformation to structures of the granular, upper and lower bainite types. The results indicate that in granular bainites the strength is raised above the base level of the matrix by the ...

Strengthening mechanisms in aluminum alloys
2011The substructure of pure aluminum and over-aged Al-4Cu has been varied by mechanical and thermal treatments. The nature of this substructure and its resistance to annealing has been studied, together with the effect of the substructure on tensile strength at ambient and elevated temperatures.
