Streptococcal toxic shock syndrome in children

Two children with toxic shock-like syndrome due to streptococcal infection are reported. In both cases (one fatal) the site of infection was in the soft tissues. Both strains of group A hemolytic streptococci isolated from blood culture produced large amounts of erythrogenic toxin B (ET B) small amounts of ET C but no ET A.

Group B Streptococcal Toxic Shock–Like Syndrome

A 42-year-old man who had undergone splenectomy presented with a 12-hour history of fever, chills, malaise, nausea, and vomiting, and a temperature of 39°C. On admission, therapy with intravenous levofloxacin and metronidazole was initiated. Six hours later, the patient became increasingly disoriented, and his blood pressure rapidly dropped.
