Oxidative stress in birds along a NOx and urbanisation gradient: An interspecific approach

Science of The Total Environment, 2018
Urbanisation is regarded as one of the most threatening global issues for wildlife, however, measuring its impact is not always straight forward. Oxidative stress physiology has been suggested to be a useful biomarker of health and therefore, a potentially important indicator of the impact that urban environmental stressors, especially air pollution ...

Non-local stress approach to fracture initiation in laboratory experiments with a tensile stress gradient

Mechanics of Materials, 2001
The paper discusses the stress distribution and the fracturing in diametrically loaded discs in which a hole has been drilled at some distance from the loaded diameter. A linear elastic analysis of the problem indicates that the maximum tensile stress at the hole is up to four times the tensile stress along the loaded diameter.

The strain gradient approach for determination of forming limit stress and strain diagrams

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part B: Journal of Engineering Manufacture, 2008
The forming limit stress diagram (FLSD) has been reported as being much less path dependent and much more favourable than the forming limit diagram (FLD) in representing forming limits in the numerical simulation of sheet metal forming processes. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop a methodology for the prediction of the forming limits ...

A stress gradient approach for fretting fatigue assessment of metallic structural components

International Journal of Fatigue, 2017
Abstract In the present paper, the fretting fatigue life assessment of metallic structural components under cylindrical contacts is performed by applying a critical plane-based multiaxial fatigue criterion. Such a criterion is formulated by using the so-called critical point method: a material point located at a certain distance from the hot-spot on ...

Non-local stress gradient approach for multiaxial fatigue of defective material

Computational Materials Science, 2008
Abstract The fatigue crack initiation from a surface defect is analysed by means of a new attempt based on multiscale reduction of the stress distribution along the potential crack initiation plane. The reduction is performed by averaging process for shear and normal stresses over two critical areas (multiscale concept). The Matake multiaxial fatigue

Integrated Effective Stress Ratio and Stress Path Approach to Fracture Gradient Estimation for Virgin and Depleted Reservoirs

SPE Nigeria Annual International Conference and Exhibition, 2019
Abstract The days of easy hydrocarbon Exploration and Production are fast disappearing in the petroleum business. Today, the industry is saddled with the task to sustain world hydrocarbon resources to meet current and future energy demands.

Stress and stress gradient evaluation — a BEM approach

Advances in Engineering Software, 1994
This paper reviews the current methods for boundary stress evaluation by the boundary element method, and derives a formula for the stress gradient on the boundary. A simple post processing scheme is presented, which uses stress continuity and stress gradient continuity along a traction boundary as two extra conditions, so that a high order shape ...

A New Approach to Evaluate Steep Stress Gradients Principally Using Layer Removal

Materials Science Forum, 2000
A new method is, reported to determine a triaxial residual stress (RS) profile as a function of the distance z from the surface from experimental X-ray data for several penetration depths T without using a Laplace transformation explicitly. The method is based on the fact, that if stress states in a thin layer vary linearly over the depth of the ...

A Direct Micromechanical Approach toward the Development of Quadratic Stress Gradient Failure Criteria for Textile Composites

Journal of Composite Materials, 2006
Based upon previous results of direct micromechanical method (DMM) analysis of the representative volume element (RVE) of a plain-weave textile composite, two methods for predicting failure envelopes are presented: a parametric ellipse-fitting scheme, and a 27-term quadratic stress-gradient failure criterion.
