Thermodynamically consistent gradient elasticity with an internal variable

open access: yes, 2020
The role of thermodynamics in continuum mechanics and the derivation of the proper constitutive relations is a discussed subject of Rational Mechanics. The classical literature did not use the accumulated knowledge of thermostatics and was very critical ...

High-resolution temporal profiling of transcripts during Arabidopsis leaf senescence reveals a distinct chronology of processes and regulation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Leaf senescence is an essential developmental process that impacts dramatically on crop yields and involves altered regulation of thousands of genes and many metabolic and signaling pathways, resulting in major changes in the leaf.

A Library for Wall-Modelled Large-Eddy Simulation Based on OpenFOAM Technology

open access: yes, 2018
This work presents a feature-rich open-source library for wall-modelled large-eddy simulation (WMLES), which is a turbulence modelling approach that reduces the computational cost of traditional (wall-resolved) LES by introducing special treatment of the

Fractional Generalizations of Gradient Mechanics

open access: yes, 2018
This short chapter provides a fractional generalization of gradient mechanics, an approach (originally advanced by the author in the mid 80s) that has gained world-wide attention in the last decades due to its capability of modeling pattern forming ...

Stress-Based Topology Optimization of Steel-Frame Structures Using Members with Standard Cross Sections: Gradient-Based Approach

open access: yesJournal of Structural Engineering, 2017
AbstractThis article presents a computationally efficient methodology for stress-based topology optimization of steel frame structures with cross-sectional properties that are mapped from I-beam se...

Skin friction in zero-pressure-gradient boundary layers

open access: yes, 2010
A global approach leading to a self-consistent solution to the Navier-Stokes-Prandtl equations for zero-pressure-gradient boundary layers is presented. It is shown that as $Re_{\delta}\rightarrow \infty$, the dynamically defined boundary layer thickness $

X-ray analysis of residual stress gradients in TiN coatings by a Laplace space approach and cross-sectional nanodiffraction: a critical comparison [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Applied Crystallography, 2013
Novel scanning synchrotron cross-sectional nanobeam and conventional laboratory as well as synchrotron Laplace X-ray diffraction methods are used to characterize residual stresses in exemplary 11.5 µm-thick TiN coatings. Both real and Laplace space approaches reveal a homogeneous tensile stress state and a very pronounced compressive stress gradient in

Gradient elasticity: a new tool for the multiaxial high-cycle fatigue assessment of notched components [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
In this paper, the accuracy of gradient elasticity in estimating the fatigue strength of engineering components, characterised by the presence of stress risers and subjected to multiaxial high-cycle fatigue loadings, is assessed.

Tracking environmental stress gradients using three biotic integrity indices: Advantages of a locally-developed traits-based approach

open access: yesEcological Indicators, 2013
Abstract Estuarine and coastal ecosystems are productive and functionally diverse areas that provide a wide range of societal benefits. Along with human exploitative uses comes an array of anthropogenic disturbances that can affect ecological integrity, including changes to the composition and resilience of benthic macroinvertebrate communities.

Local stress gradient approach for multiaxial fatigue behaviour assessment of high strength steels in occurrence of defects

open access: yesProcedia Engineering, 2018
This study is dedicated to the effect of surface defects on the fatigue behaviour of high strength steels and the evaluation of their sensitivity. For that purpose, defects were introduced by Electro-Discharge Machining (EDM) on the edge of sheet metal test samples. Different defect depths are tested on high strength steel grades.
