Effect of stress gradients in the surface layer of beryllium on X-ray stress measurement
Materials Characterization, 2002Abstract The effects of stress gradients in beryllium surface layers on traditional X-ray stress measurements are investigated by relationship analysis of d vs. (sin ψ ) 2 plots with stress gradient in the surface layers of beryllium. The results show that over the range of (sin ψ ) 2 ≤0.5, there are significant effects of stress gradient on the

Effect of velocity gradients on measurements of turbulent shear stress
AIAA Journal, 1976Experiments were carried out to evaluate the effects of normal velocity gradients on hot wire measurements in a subsonic boundary layer of the same size as the flow investigated by Johnson and Rose (1975). Both hot wire and film anemometers were used to measure the turbulent properties of the boundary layer.

Size and stress gradient effects on fracture around cavities
Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering, 1992The effect of hole size on fracture initiation around cavities in rock is examined through physical model tests on Tyndall limestone. Twenty five models, employing nine different hole sizes, ranging from 3.2 to 62 mm in diameter were tested in uniaxial compression.

Effects of SGS stresses on velocity gradient dynamics
2002The effects of small-scale motions on the inertial range structure of turbulence are investigated by considering the dynamics of the velocity gradient tensor filtered at inertial-range scales. In addition to self-interactions and the filtered pressure Hessian, the evolution of the filtered velocity gradient tensor is determined by the subgrid-scale ...

Effect of tensile stress gradient on brittle fracture initiation
International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Mining Sciences & Geomechanics Abstracts, 1972Abstract The problem of tension fracture initiation from a few types of voids and cracks subjected to compressive loading is examined theoretically and experimentally. It is shown that equality between maximum tensile stress concentration and the uniaxial tensile strength is a necessary but not an adequate condition for fracture initiation.

The effect of longitudinal gradients of compressive stress upon the failure of concrete
Magazine of Concrete Research, 1971Synopsis The results of an experimental programme on the failure of concrete when subjected to longitudinal gradients of compressive stress are reported. The test specimens are point-loaded reinforced concrete beams. beams of tapering width under constant moment and tapering prisms under axial compression.

Effect of longitudinal stress gradient on the ultimate strength of thin plates
Thin-Walled Structures, 2006When thin-walled sections are subjected to a moment gradient, the plates that comprise the section are themselves subjected to a longitudinal stress gradient. This paper analyzes the effect of longitudinal stress gradient on the ultimate strength of thin plates.

The effect of a temperature gradient on residual stresses and distortion in injection moldings
Polymer Engineering & Science, 1984AbstractDistortion of bars injection‐molded from polystyrene, polypropylene, and glass‐fiber‐filled polypropylene and subsequently placed in a temperature gradient has been examined. Residual stress distributions have been measured both for the as‐molded state and after annealing in a temperature gradient. In the as‐molded state all moldings showed the
