The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1964 A system developed by Trager and Smith for the transcription of pitch and stress is in wide use by linguists. Four pitch levels, four stress levels, and three “terminal contours” are used to differentiate special prosodic “morphemes,” which are supposed to carry specific meanings that are independent of the sentences' words.
