Microscopic stress tensors in atoms
Physical Review B, 1986Calculations are presented for microscopic quantum stress tensors for selected closed-shell atomic systems. The stress tensor in spherically symmetric atoms is expressed as a diagonal dyadic in terms of spherical-polar unit vectors. In equilibrium the balancing of momentum and electric flux implies a relationship between the radial and tangential ...

The Stress Tensor in Entangled Polymers
Physical Review Letters, 2002In entangled polymeric liquids, a subchain connecting two entanglements is an open system which can exchange particles (Kuhn segments) with its neighboring subchains along the polymer chain. We present a calculation of the subchain mechanical behavior as determined from the grand canonical formalism of statistical mechanics, with different subchains in

The stress tensor in colloidal suspensions
The Journal of Chemical Physics, 1995This paper presents a new derivation of an expression for the average stress tensor in colloidal suspensions of interacting particles, based on methods from statistical mechanics. In conventional methods all contributions to the stress tensor are added one by one to compose the final result, and each contribution requires a separate justification ...

Stress Vector and Stress Tensor
2010A man may imagine things that are false, but he can only understand things that are true, for if the things be false, the apprehension of them is not understanding . Isaac Newton Introduction In the beginning of Chapter 3, we briefly discussed the need to study deformation in materials that we may design for engineering applications.

Distributed forces resulting from molecular interactions between macroscopic bodies are usually concentrated near surfaces. A new formulation has been developed that replaces these distributed body forces by effective surface tractions and is not limited by the geometrical restrictions of Derjaguin's approximation.

We show how to introduce the “Noether Operator” of a (possibly constrained) variational principle even when the Lagrangian contains spinor fields (and their derivatives to any finite order). After relating that operator to the so-called “canonical” and “symmetric” stress-energy tensors, we construct explicitly the divergence by which these differ.

VISUALIZING DIRECTIONAL STRESSES IN A STRESS TENSOR FIELD
2006Tensors represent a natural means for describing many physical phenomena. Therefore, there is a need to develop methods that will assist in analyzing such data. Despite some calls for generality, we concentrate on quite a specific application because general methods designed for visualizing information contained in second order tensor fields may fail ...
