Modeling the Possible Influences of Eye Movements on the Refinement of Cortical Direction Selectivity [PDF]
The second-order statistics of neural activity was examined in a model of the cat LGN and V1 during free-viewing of natural images. In the model, the specific patterns of thalamocortical activity required for a Bebbian maturation of direction-selective ...

Rehabilitation of homonymous hemianopia: insight into blindsight
Strong evidence of considerable plasticity in primary sensory areas in the adult cortex, and of dramatic cross-modal reorganization in visual areas, after short- or long-term visual deprivation has recently been reported.

Impaired discrimination following polarisation of the striate cortex
Two rhesus monkeys were trained to solve a problem involving the recognition of tachistoscopically presented objects. Performance at this task was impaired by the passage of surface-positive polarising currents through the striate cortex: the impairment persisted after current was turned off, decaying in a reasonably exponential manner with a time ...

Topographic organization across foveal visual areas in macaques
IntroductionWhile the fovea on the retina covers only a small region of the visual field, a significant portion of the visual cortex is dedicated to processing information from the fovea being a critical center for object recognition, motion control, and

Population receptive field (pRF) modelling reconstructs the properties of visually responsive neuronal populations, typically using fMRI in humans. However, fMRI is an indirect measure of neural activity.

Two-photon imaging of calcium in virally transfected striate cortical neurons of behaving monkey.
Two-photon scanning microscopy has advanced our understanding of neural signaling in non-mammalian species and mammals. Various developments are needed to perform two-photon scanning microscopy over prolonged periods in non-human primates performing a ...

Multi-area visuotopic map complexes in macaque striate and extra-striate cortex
We propose that a simple, closed-form mathematical expression-the Wedge-Dipole mapping-provides a concise approximation to the full-field, two-dimensional topographic structure of macaque V1, V2, and V3. A single map function, which we term a map complex, acts as a simultaneous descriptor of all three areas.

A theory of a saliency map in primary visual cortex (V1) tested by psychophysics of color-orientation interference in texture segmentation [PDF]
It has been proposed that V1 creates a bottom-up saliency map, where saliency of any location increases with the firing rate of the most active V1 output cell responding to it, regardless the feature selectivity of the cell.
