Abstract Upland rice breeding lines were evaluated in field trials for resistance to the obligate hemi-root parasite Striga hermonthica at two sites in Kenya in 1990 and 1991. The lines differed in their reaction to S. hermonthica ranging from highly resistant to extremely susceptible.

The dynamics of strigolactone perception in Striga hermonthica: a working hypothesis

Plant-derived strigolactones have diverse functions at ecological scale, including effects upon the growth of plants themselves. The parasitic plants from the family Orobanchaceae interfere with the ecological and hormonal functions of strigolactones to generate unique germination abilities based on the sensing of host-derived strigolactones.

Effect of fungal toxins on germination of Striga hermonthica seeds

Weed Research, 1999
Fourteen fungal toxins were assayed in vitro to evaluate their effect on seed germination of the parasitic weed Striga hermonthica. Among them, T‐2 toxin proved to be the most active, being able to inhibit 100% seed germination at 10−5 M, and being still active when tested at a concentration of 10−7 M (19% inhibition).
