Response of maize varieties to Striga infestation
Crop Protection, 2004Abstract Striga hermonthica is endemic in the semi-arid and semi-humid areas of Sub-Sahara Africa. This plant parasite reduces crop yields of maize and sorghum, the major staple food source of the region. Presently, there are no Striga -resistant maize varieties commercially available in Western Kenya.

Plant Science, 2011Strigolactones are signaling molecules that play a role in host recognition by parasitic plants of the Striga, Orobanche and Phelipanche genera which are among the most detrimental weeds in agriculture. In Tanzania, maize is grown on about 2 million hectares but the yield obtained is very low, estimated at 1.3 tons ha–1; this is due to various factors including striga weeds. The control measures used have not been effective.
