Screening of Sorghum Mutant Lines in Vitro and Greenhouse Against Striga Hermonthica Infestation

Earth & Environmental Science Research & Reviews, 2022
The parasitic weed, Striga hermonthica (Del.) Benth is a major constraint to cereal productions such as sorghum. In Burkina Faso, sorghum is the first of the cereals, in terms of cultivated areas and human consumption per capita. This study aimed to identify resistant lines by screening 31 sorghum mutant lines.

Spatial distribution and population dynamics of Striga hermonthica seeds in naturally infested farm soils

Plant and Soil, 1997
Densities and spatial distribution in soil of seeds of Striga hermonthica were analysed for four naturally infested farm fields in Western Kenya. A revised method for extraction of Striga seeds from soil was used, combining centrifugation with existing techniques based on flotation. Tests showed that 85% of Striga seeds were retrieved from soil samples.

Reaction of some maize genotyhpes to infestation with the witch weed (Striga asiatica)

Moor Journal of Agricultural Research, 2005
A total of twenty four maize genotypes comprising nine inbreds, six open pollinated, four synthetic and five hybrids were tested for tolerance to artificial infestation of Striga asiatica using seeds of the pest as inoculum source. Yields varied directly with tolerance level and reduction in plant height was observed with increase in age of the maize ...
