The physics of guitar string vibrations

American Journal of Physics, 2016
We describe laboratory experiments to study the harmonic content of standing waves in guitar strings. The experimental data were taken by using the magnetic pickup from a guitar and a digital oscilloscope with a Fast Fourier transform capability. The amplitudes of the harmonics in the measured signal depend on the location where the string is plucked ...

String Theory and Particle Physics

2012
String theory is one of the most active branches of theoretical physics and has the potential to provide a unified description of all known particles and interactions. This book is a systematic introduction to the subject, focused on the detailed description of how string theory is connected to the real world of particle physics.

General Relativity, Strings, and Mathematical Physics

Letters in Mathematical Physics, 1999
This article is a review of string theory in the quantization of gravity and the unification of fundamental forces. There is a lot to condense into such a brief article so only the barest outline is given. Nevertheless, the reader will find many key points with pertinent citations.

A STRING MODEL WITH ONE PHYSICAL STATE

Modern Physics Letters A, 1994
Further investigation on a bosonic string model with second class constraints is carried out. The physical space of the model is built up. It is shown, using analogy with the point particle with additional space-time gauge symmetry, that there is only one physical state in the model corresponding to an antisymmetric second rank tensor.

Physical Synthesis of Bowed String Instruments

2007
This chapter describes how bowed string instruments such as the violin, viola, cello, and bass can be modeled using equations that describe their most significant physical attributes. It discusses the structure of a bowed string instrument and presents a description of the development of the research on vibrating strings.

Acoustics: The physics of vibrating strings

Physics Bulletin, 1985
It may come as something of a surprise to learn that anything new could be discovered about vibrating strings. However, until relatively recently, no one appears to have measured the resonant response of a string on a sonometer or stringed musical instrument with the resolution or accuracy necessary to reveal the way that a string vibrates in practice –
