EVOLUTION OF A STRING NETWORK IN BACKGROUNDS WITH ROLLING HORIZONS [PDF]

open access: yes, 1995
We discuss the temporal variation of the equation of state of a classical string network, evolving in a background in which the Hubble radius 1/H shrinks to a minimum and then re-expands to infinity.

String and M-theory: answering the critics

open access: yes, 2011
Using as a springboard a three-way debate between theoretical physicist Lee Smolin, philosopher of science Nancy Cartwright and myself, I address in layman's terms the issues of why we need a unified theory of the fundamental interactions and why, in my ...

Impact of Nanoparticle Stiffness on Endosomal Escape and Signaling Pathways in Cytosolic Delivery

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Nanoparticle (NP) stiffness affects cellular uptake, but its impact on intracellular distribution remains unclear. This study synthesizes silica nanocapsules with varying stiffness, inspired by viral mechanisms, and applies assays to measure cellular uptake and escape efficiency.

Advanced Electrode Materials for Efficient Hydrogen Production in Protonic Ceramic Electrolysis Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Protonic ceramic electrolysis cells (PCECs) are a promising intermediate‐temperature hydrogen production technology, leveraging high proton conductivity in electrolytes yet constrained by insufficient catalytic activity and interfacial instability in fuel/air electrodes. This review systematically categorizes advanced electrode materials and critically

Additive Manufacturing of Neuromorphic Systems

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The crossover of additive Manufacturing (AM) and neuromorphic engineering promises a new paradigm in the fabrication of intelligent hardware—one that is sustainable, scalable, cost‐efficient, and customizable. The AM‐printed neuromorphic hardware (electronics and mechanical systems) is examined, and we discussed the technological integration.

Rapid Glass‐Substrate Digital Light 3D Printing Enables Anatomically Accurate Stroke Patient‐Specific Carotid Artery‐on‐Chips for Personalized Thrombosis Investigation

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A rapid glass‐substrate 3D microfabrication method creates anatomically accurate carotid artery‐on‐a‐chip models from stroke patient scans in 2 h. These miniaturized devices replicate patient‐specific blood vessel geometry and flow patterns, enabling real‐time imaging of clot formation under controlled injury.

N=2 Instanton Calculus In Closed String Background

open access: yes, 2007
In this contribution we describe how to obtain instanton effects in four dimensional gauge theories by computing string scattering amplitudes in D3/D(-1) brane systems.

How the Arrangement of Platinum Atoms on Ruthenium Nanoparticles Improves Hydrogen Evolution Activity

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A synthetic strategy for the formation of Pt islands and their transformation into Pt atomic strings on Ru nanoparticle surfaces is presented. The thermodynamically favored configuration of Pt strings on Ru catalyst is demonstrated to catalyze HER via the faster Volmer–Tafel pathway with a significantly improved intrinsic activity, owing to the well ...
