D-branes at Singularities and String Phenomenology
In these notes we give an introduction to some of the concepts involved in constructing SM-like gauge theories in systems of branes at singularities of CY manifolds. These notes are an expanded version of lectures given by Herman Verlinde at the Cargese 2006 Summer School.

We present a mechanism for realizing hybrid inflation using two axion fields with a purely non-perturbatively generated scalar potential. The structure of the scalar potential is highly constrained by the discrete shift symmetries of the axions.

Some properties of the QQq-quark potential in string models
We propose a string theory construction which allows us to study properties of the potential of two heavy quarks coupled to a light quark. In such a case, the potential is a function of separation between the heavy quarks.

A CMB Millikan experiment with cosmic axiverse strings
We study axion strings of hyperlight axions coupled to photons. Hyperlight axions — axions lighter than Hubble at recombination — are a generic prediction of the string axiverse.

Thraxions: ultralight throat axions
We argue that a new type of extremely light axion is generically present in the type IIB part of the string theory landscape. Its mass is suppressed by the third power of the warp factor of a strongly warped region (Klebanov-Strassler throat), suggesting

Resolving the (g − 2) μ discrepancy with F $$ \mathcal{F} $$ –SU(5) intersecting D-branes
A discrepancy between the measured anomalous magnetic moment of the muon (g − 2) μ and computed Standard Model value now stands at a combined 4.2σ following experiments at Brookhaven National Lab (BNL) and the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL).

Superheavy dark matter from string theory
Explicit string models which can realize inflation and low-energy supersymmetry are notoriously difficult to achieve. Given that sequestering requires very specific configurations, supersymmetric particles are in general expected to be very heavy ...

No-go theorems for ekpyrosis from ten-dimensional supergravity
In this note we investigate whether the new ekpyrotic scenario can be embedded into ten-dimensional supergravity. We use that the scalar potential obtained from flux compactifications of type II supergravity with sources has a universal scaling with ...
