Life-history trade-offs in a generalist digenean from cetaceans: the role of host specificity and environmental factors

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2015
Background Adults and larvae of generalist parasites are exposed to diverse hosts and local environmental conditions throughout their life cycles, thus local adaptation is expected to occur through phenotypic plasticity and/or natural selection.

Efficient isolation on Vero.DogSLAMtag cells and full genome characterization of Dolphin Morbillivirus (DMV) by next generation sequencing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The Dolphin Morbillivirus (DMV) genome from the frst Mediterranean epidemic (1990-\u201992) is the only cetacean Morbillivirus that has been completely sequenced.

Insights Into Dolphins' Immunology: Immuno-Phenotypic Study on Mediterranean and Atlantic Stranded Cetaceans

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2019
Immunology of marine mammals is a relatively understudied field and its monitoring plays an important role in the individual and group management of these animals, along with an increasing value as an environmental health indicator.

Primary structure of striped dolphin renal metallothionein II.

open access: yesAgricultural and Biological Chemistry, 1988
The complete amino acid sequence of metallothionein II isolated from kidneys of the striped dolphin, Stenella coeruleoalba, is reported. The sequence was established by a gas phase protein sequencer using the fragments obtained by cyanogen bromide cleavage and protease digestions of the S-carboxamidomethylated protein.

Stomach contents of cetaceans in the Alboran Sea and Gulf of Cadiz.

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2014
This work describes the diet, through the analysis of stomach contents, of different species of cetaceans in Andalusian waters. Stomachs of 53 specimens, 36 striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba), 13 common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) and 4 Risso's ...

Coinfection by Ureaplasma spp., Photobacterium damselae and an Actinomyces-like microorganism in a bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) with pleuropneumonia stranded along the Adriatic coast of Italy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
A case of pleuropneumonia is reported in an adult male bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) found stranded in 2014 along the Central Adriatic coast of Italy.

Dolphin Morbillivirus Epizootic Resurgence, Mediterranean Sea

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2008
In July 2007, >100 striped dolphins, Stenella coeruleoalba, were found dead along the coast of the Spanish Mediterranean. Of 10 dolphins tested, 7 were positive for a virus strain closely related to the dolphin morbillivirus that was isolated during a ...

Molecular Characterization of Herpesviral Encephalitis in Cetaceans: Correlation with Histopathological and Immunohistochemical Findings

open access: yesAnimals, 2022
Herpesviruses are causative agents of meningitis and encephalitis in cetaceans, which are among the main leading known natural causes of death in these species.

Forebrain neuroanatomy of the neonatal and juvenile dolphin (T. truncatus & S. coeruloalba)

open access: yesFrontiers in Neuroanatomy, 2015
Knowledge of dolphin functional neuroanatomy mostly derives from post-mortem studies and non-invasive approaches (i.e. magnetic resonance imaging), due to limitations in experimentation on cetaceans.

Bartonella species detection in captive, stranded and free-ranging cetaceans [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
We present prevalence of Bartonella spp. for multiple cohorts of wild and captive cetaceans. One hundred and six cetaceans including 86 bottlenose dolphins (71 free-ranging, 14 captive in a facility with a dolphin experiencing debility of unknown origin,
