Spatial-based management for cetacean conservation: a Portuguese coast case study

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
Cetaceans are critical indicators of ecosystem health, yet face significant threats from overfishing, habitat loss, and climate change. Key conservation strategies in the EU include Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), the Natura 2000 network, and Important ...

Neurobrucellosis in a common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) stranded in the Canary Islands

open access: yesBMC Veterinary Research, 2019
Background Brucella spp. isolation is increasingly reported in cetaceans, although associated pathologies, including lesions of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems, are less frequently described. Concerning the nervous system, Brucella sp.

Closing the Gaps: Integrating Biological, Ecological and Taxonomic Data to Support the Identification and Conservation of the Atlantic Pygmy Devil Ray (Mobula hypostoma)

open access: yesAquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, Volume 36, Issue 5, May 2026.
ABSTRACT The Atlantic pygmy devil ray (Mobula hypostoma) is an endangered mobulid species whose conservation is hindered by taxonomic confusion and significant gaps in ecological and life history knowledge. Here, we present an integrative study that clarifies the species' taxonomic status, updates its distribution and synthesizes new and existing data ...

Trends in marine species distribution models: a review of methodological advances and future challenges

open access: yesEcography, Volume 2026, Issue 5, May 2026.
Correlative species distribution models (SDMs) are quantitative tools in biogeography and macroecology. Building upon the ecological niche concept, they correlate environmental covariates to species presence to model habitat suitability and predict species distributions.

Active Versus Passive eDNA Sampling Across Depths at a Tropical Fish‐Aggregating Device (FAD)

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 8, Issue 3, May–June 2026.
Sampling at a fish aggregating device over three consecutive days using active and passive samplers detected a total of 39 fish operational taxonomic units (OTUs). Of these, 25 OTUs were shared between the two sampling approaches. The composition of detected OTUs varied among days and between sampler types.

Morphology and Distribution of Olfactory Receptor Neurons in Southern Bluefin Tuna, Thunnus maccoyii (Teleostei): Implications for Olfactory Hydrodynamics

open access: yesJournal of Morphology, Volume 287, Issue 5, May 2026.
The number and distribution of olfactory receptors over the olfactory lamellar surface of four juvenile southern bluefin tuna were quantified using scanning electron microscopy. The microvillous olfactory receptors (mORN) are concentrated in the rostral region of the lamellar surface, while ciliated olfactory receptors (cORN), which are dominant in ...

Review of the biology and exploitation of striped dolphins in Japan

open access: yesJ. Cetacean Res. Manage., 1999
The biology, distribution, abundance and exploitation of striped dolphins off Japan are reviewed in an attempt to collate the available information required for a better understanding of the status of populations exploited by Japanese fisheries. Striped dolphins are found in summer in three geographical aggregations in the Pacific waters off Japan ...

The First Report of Pennella (Crustacea: Copepoda) Infesting Stenella coeruleoalba Stranded in Malta: Morphological and Genetic Analyses

open access: yesAnimals
Here, we document the stranding of a striped dolphin Stenella coeruleoalba (Meyen, 1833) (Mammalia: Delphinidae), which was found dead in Maltese waters in July 2020.

Neuronal and astrocytic involvement in striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) with morbilliviral encephalitis

open access: yesActa virologica, 2017
Dolphin morbillivirus (DMV), a highly pathogenic agent, may cause peculiar, "brain-only" forms of infection (BOFDI), in which viral antigen and/or genome is found exclusively in the brain from striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba). These BOFDIs show morphopathological similarities with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis and old dog encephalitis ...

Organisation and evolution of the major histocompatibility complex class I genes in cetaceans

open access: yesiScience
Summary: A quarter of marine mammals are at risk of extinction, with disease and poor habitat quality contributing to population decline. Investigation of the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) provides insight into species’ capacity to respond to ...
