Strontium-90 and Infant Mortality
Nature, 1969The recent claim that strontium-90 resulting from tests of nuclear weapons has killed 400,000 children in the United States since 1945 does not stand up to careful analysis.

Strontium 90 effective half-life is 2.7 x 10/sup 3/ days. It emits beta rays and is selectively absorbed by bone. Strontium-90 is chemically allied to calcium and it moves with this element through the food chains and the foods which supply calcium to the body also supply strontium.

Strontium-90 and Skeletal Formation
Science, 1957The potential radiostrontium level to be expected in the skeletons of growing children as a result of environmental contamination was computed. Results are based on available data on the rate of bone remodeling and exchange, the rate of skeletal growth, and the level of /sup 90/Sr in the biosphere.

Strontium-90 on the Earth's Surface
Nature, 1968Estimations of the amount of strontium-90 on the Earth's surface indicate that maximum fallout occurred late in 1966. Of the 13 MCi recorded at the beginning of 1967, 82 per cent of this was in the northern hemisphere.

Measurements were made of the Sr/sup 90/ content of 121 teeth collected in 1959. After a number of analytical steps, the final Sr/sup 90/ content was determined by counting carrier-free Y/sup 90/ daughter. A statistical analysis of results indicates that there is a definite inverse correlation between Sr/sup 90/ concentration and age.

IN 1963, Hopkins et al.1 reported the accumulation of significant amounts of strontium-90 in the hair of rats which had acquired known body burdens of the radio-nuclide either by injection or in utero. They further suggested that the analysis of hair could provide a non-destructive method of measuring bone seeking radio-elements.

Strontium-90 in antlers of red deer: an indicator of environmental contamination by strontium-90
Science of The Total Environment, 1994The sampling procedures in connection with a very sensitive analytical method are described. Results from different areas in Austria are presented and an interpretion of the results is attempted. Some findings are in accordance with measurements from other substances, some are not. The differences most probably depend on several factors like soil type,

Clams as Indicators of Strontium-90
Science, 1962Fresh-water clams concentrate strontium-90 in their shells and may be used as indicators of the Sr 90 contamination of their environment. Analysis of data derived from the specific activity of Sr 90 in shells showed that Sr 90 released to the Tennessee River system ...
