Stable Mg2+ Dication Weakly Stabilized/Coordinated in Solution: Synthesis, Structure, Reactivity, and Use in Catalysis

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
Stable Mg2+ dication stabilized only by weakly coordinating carborates was first prepared and structurally characterized as a soluble salt in organic solvents. Combined experimental and theoretical data provided valuable insights into its behavior/reactivity in solution.

Asymmetric Intramolecular α‐Arylation of Polar Amino Acids Bearing β‐Leaving Groups

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
Use of enolate chemistry to functionalise amino acids with β‐heteroatom side‐chains (serine, cysteine, threonine, etc.) is hampered by β‐elimination. We show that α‐arylation can be achieved by incorporating the side chain into a saturated heterocycle, making the unwanted elimination a disfavoured 5‐endo‐trig reaction.

Shaping of a Reactive Manganese Catalyst Enables Access to Polyfunctionalized Cyclohexanes via Enantioselective C(sp3)─H Bond Oxidation of 1,3‐meso Diethers

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
Structural shaping of a highly reactive chiral Mn‐oxo species translates into exceptionally enantioselective C─H oxidation catalyst of cyclohexyl 1,3‐meso diethers (up to >99% ee) leading to polyfunctionalized cyclohexanes. Abstract Chiral polyoxygenated cyclohexanes are valuable constituents of biologically relevant products.

Structural Origin of Spin‐Orbit Splitting of 1P Orbitals of Icosahedral Au13 Superatom Protected by Ligands

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
The spin‐orbit (SO) splitting of the superatomic 1P orbitals in thiolate‐protected Au13 superatoms were investigated. Cryogenic anion photoelectron spectroscopy and fully relativistic calculation including SO coupling revealed the 1P orbitals of the Au13 and Au@Ag12 superatomic cores undergo SO splitting, while not in the Ag13 core.

Au147(SPh)30(PPh3)12: A Geometrically Closed, but Electronically Open Triple‐Shell Icosahedral Gold Cluster and its Geometrically Open Counterpart

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie International Edition, EarlyView.
The first triple‐shell icosahedral metal cluster, Au147(SPh)30(PPh3)12, is stabilized by phosphines and thiolates but does not show stable motifs. This cluster fills the gap between single‐shell clusters and nanoparticles in the form of an icosahedron.
