Characteristics of successful innovative firms are examined in this paper. These characteristics are found to vary with firm size, type, and operating environment. In addition, structural changes undergone by some large, established firms in response to a changing and more competitive environment are explored in the light of real‐life examples.

Innovation and the Evolution of Market Structure
The Journal of Industrial Economics, 1990This paper examines the association between innovation and the evolution of market structure. A dynamic model of market concentration is applied to seventy-three U.K. industries, 1970-79, and the results are found to be consistent with the hypothesis that innovation is deconcentrating.
