Realism and the Structures of Fantasy
2022Abstract When we look at realism through the lens of fantasy rather than as a contrast with it, its constructed nature becomes more evident. The notion of what is realistic changes continually, but it is generally restricted to stories that are not merely possible but probable.

Reconsidering Structural Realism
Canadian Journal of Philosophy, 2003In the lengthy debate over the question of scientific realism one of the least discussed positions is structural realism. However, this position ought to attract critical attention because it purports to preserve the central insights of the best arguments for both realism and anti-realism.

Methodological Structural Realism
2011Scientists believe in the existence of electrons, bosons, fermions, fields, forces, space-time, etc.; they, unlike their philosophical realist counterparts, do not believe, however, in the existence of phenomena or noumena, observables or unobservables, detection or auxiliary properties, etc.

Structuralism and Scientific Realism
1983(0.0) Professor Stegmuller’ part in developing the so-called “structuralist view” of empirical theories is well known. It has been my privilege and pleasure to be associated with him in this enterprise. My contribution to this volume honoring Professor Stegmuller is an attempt to illuminate some rather general philosophical issues that have been raised

Structural Realism and Interconnectivity
2003As a theory, now decades old, it has been said that structural realism has run its course in explanations of international relations in the post—Cold War era. Presumably this is because since the end of the Cold War, there is now as expected the long-term absence of a major war between the major states.

Mathematical Structural Realism
2010Unrestricted or global scientific realism is the view that we should take seriously the whole content of empirically successful scientific theories. This attitude requires us to believe that the theoretical claims of the theory are true, or approximately true, and that scientific progress consists in increasing the scope and accuracy of these theories.

This chapter examines why states pursue power from the perspective of structural realism. It considers a body of realist theories that argue that states have deep concern for the balance of power and compete among themselves either to gain power at the expense of others or at least to make sure they do not lose power.
