Structural realism, mathematics, and ontology
Studies in History and Philosophy of Science Part A, 2019Over the last two decades structural realism has been given progressively more elaborated formulations. Steven French has been at the forefront of the development of the most conceptually sophisticated and historically sensitive version of the view. In his book, The Structure of the World (French (2014)), French shows how structural realism, the view ...

From Standard Scientific Realism and Structural Realism to Best Current Theory Realism
Journal for General Philosophy of Science, 2011I defend a realist commitment to the truth of our most empirically successful current scientific theories—on the ground that it provides the best explanation of their success and the success of their falsified predecessors. I argue that this Best Current Theory Realism (BCTR) is superior to preservative realism (PR) and the structural realism (SR).

Mathematical Structural Realism
2010Unrestricted or global scientific realism is the view that we should take seriously the whole content of empirically successful scientific theories. This attitude requires us to believe that the theoretical claims of the theory are true, or approximately true, and that scientific progress consists in increasing the scope and accuracy of these theories.

This chapter examines why states pursue power from the perspective of structural realism. It considers a body of realist theories that argue that states have deep concern for the balance of power and compete among themselves either to gain power at the expense of others, or at least to make sure they do not lose power.

Structural realism and Davidson
Synthese, 2007Structural realism is an attempt to balance the competing demands of the No Miracles Argument and the Pessimistic Meta-Induction. In this paper I trace the development of the structuralist idea through the work of one of its leading advocates, John Worrall. I suggest that properly thought through what the structuralist is offering or should be offering

Epistemic Informational Structural Realism
Minds and Machines, 2016The paper surveys Floridi's attempt for laying down informational structural realism (ISR). After considering a number of reactions to the pars destruens of Floridi's attack on the digital ontology, I show that Floridi's enterprise for enriching the ISR by borrowing elements from the ontic form of structural realism (in the pars construens) is blighted

Structuralism and Scientific Realism
1983(0.0) Professor Stegmuller’ part in developing the so-called “structuralist view” of empirical theories is well known. It has been my privilege and pleasure to be associated with him in this enterprise. My contribution to this volume honoring Professor Stegmuller is an attempt to illuminate some rather general philosophical issues that have been raised
