SP-175: Concrete and Blast Effects, 1998The Naval Facilities Engineering Service Center (NFESC) is developing a new ordnance storage magazine that will reduce encumbered land and improve operational efficiency. Energy absorbing walls using lightweight concrete are being developed to prevent sympathetic detonation between cased munitions stored in adjacent cells.

Structure of toxic shock syndrome toxin 1
Biochemistry, 1993The three-dimensional structure of toxic shock syndrome toxin 1 (TSST-1) from Staphylococcus aureus has been determined and refined to an R value of 0.226 for data between 8- and 2.5-A resolution. Overall, the structure of TSST-1 is similar to that of another superantigen, staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB).

Breakdown of shock-wave-structure solutions
Physical Review E, 1993We determine, for a generic dissipative hyperbolic system of balance laws, an upper bound such that for shock velocity greater than this limit no continuous shock-wave-structure solutions may exist. These general results are applied to the old and open problem of shock waves in classical and relativistic nonequilibrium thermodynamics.

THERMONUCLEAR SHOCK WAVE STRUCTURE
1966Abstract : The structure of a very strong shock wave propagating through a deuterium-tritium gas mixture and a pure tritium gas is studied. The temperature behind the shock wave is sufficiently high so that thermonuclear reaction probabilities are large. The wave structure is similar to that of detonations in chemically reacting gases.

Continuous shock structure in extended thermodynamics
Physical Review E, 1995It is shown by numerical calculations that in extended thermodynamics of 13, 14, 20, and 21 moments a continuous shock structure exists up to a critical Mach number. The critical Mach number increases by increasing the number of moments; the value runs from 1.65 for 13 moments up to 1.887 for 21 moments.

Shock waves are treated as singular surfaces in gas dynamics, i.E. as abrupt jumps of the thermodynamic fields. Experiments show, however that the thermodynamic fields are smooth in a shock, although quite steep. Thus the pressure may increase by a large factor on the short distance of a few mean free paths.
