DeepXRD, a Deep Learning Model for Predicting XRD spectrum from Material Composition.
ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces, 2022One of the long-standing problems in materials science is how to predict a material's structure and then its properties given only its composition. Experimental characterization of crystal structures has been widely used for structure determination ...

Localized Structures In Nonlinear Optical Systems And Materials
1996Diffractive effects in passive nonlinear optical resonators can lead to pattern forming bifurcations with subcritical character. When the pattern (in our case, a regular hexagonal lattice of intensity peaks) coexists with the homogeneous solution, localised structures can be excited, consisting in a single intensity peak in the transverse plane.

Material Behavior and Optimum Design of Structural Systems
Journal of Structural Engineering, 1989TO cope with more realistic material behavior in the structural optimization process, this paper introduces a general constitutive model based on seven parameters along with the secant stiffness method and the Rosenbrock's minimization algorithm. In addition, the concepts of reserve and residual strengths are used to study the effect of optimization on

Human error impact in structural safety of a reinforced concrete bridge
Structure and Infrastructure Engineering, 2021The economic and social losses due to increasing bridges collapse over the years have underlined the importance of the development of more robust bridge structural systems when exposed to harmful events, such as natural hazards, human-made hazards and ...

Topological Insulators: Electronic Structure, Material Systems and Applications
Microelectronics and Optoelectronics, 2017Topological insulators are a new class of materials characterized by fully spin-polarized surface states, a linear dispersion, imperviousness to external non-magnetic perturbations, and a helical character arising out of the perpendicular spin-momentum locking.

Nothing is lost, nothing is created, everything is reused: structural design for a circular economy
The Structural Engineer, 2020Structural designers’ efforts to reduce environmental impacts traditionally consist of developing systems that minimise material quantities or use low-impact materials.

Mechanics in Soft-Hard Materials Integrated Structures and Systems
2023Soft-hard materials integrated structures and systems are ubiquitous in biological materials and structures, such as the soft proteins and the hard mineralized chitin fibers in exoskeletons of crustaceans like lobsters and crabs. The inherent difference in physical results in a significant mismatch in their mechanical behaviors.

Fiber Optic Nerve Systems for Smart Materials and Smart Structures
Advanced Photonics & Renewable Energy, 2004We have been developing "fiber optic nerve systems" for "smart structures and smart materials," in which an optical fiber acts as sensor to measure distribution of strain and/or pressure along it. By embedding the fiber in structures and materials, such as buildings, bridges, aircraft fuel-tanks and pipe-lines, we can realize health monitoring ...

Fiber optic sensing system for smart materials and structures
2001 IEEE/ASME International Conference on Advanced Intelligent Mechatronics. Proceedings (Cat. No.01TH8556), 2002In this work, a fiber optic multiparameter sensing system is presented It could be used for process and structural health monitoring in concrete structures. Reflectometric technique has been implemented for refractive index measurements by using as transducer the fiber end/host interface. Results on the capability of the developed sensor to monitor the
