Serviceability and ultimate performance of long span timber floor modules [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The advent of engineered wood products (EVVP’s) such as LVL and glulam as well as a new generation of adhesives has provided the means to fabricate large section, long spanning structural members with similar structural properties to that of steel or ...

Fully reversible reinforcement of softwood beams with unbonded composite plates [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
In this paper, results of flexure tests aimed at improving the structural behaviour of softwood beams reinforced with unglued composite plates and at developing an effective alternative to the use of organic resins are presented.

Performance assessment of a potential underground thermal storage facility: Case study of the closed mine Prosper‐Haniel in the Ruhr coal mining area in Germany

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates the feasibility of an underground closed‐loop thermal storage facility at a post‐mining site, intended for seasonal heat energy storage. Its principal design shows water flow directions in winter and summer (1, 2), heat pumps (3), an upper water reservoir (4), and connecting pipes (5).

Regeneration failure, fire, topography, and climate interact to drive temperate wet forest landscapes into fire traps

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
Where early successional forests are more flammable than old‐growth forests, forested landscapes are vulnerable to shifting into ‘fire traps' through positive feedbacks, where fire leads to more fire. These feedbacks are amplified by increased flammability driven by climate change, the presence of non‐native flammable plant species, and slowed ...

Tree-shaped Timber Structural System [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
This paper focuses on the main characteristics of a TREE-SHAPED TIMBER STRUCTURAL SYSTEM, or simply, Tree-Shaped. One of them is the complexity of its steel connections, responsible for the joint of bar elements, compounding a complex structural system ...

Nested Institutions and Overlapping Mandates: A Policy Analysis of Mangrove Governance in Ghana, Tanzania Mainland, and Zanzibar

open access: yesEnvironmental Policy and Governance, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Mangroves are critical resources in sustaining coastal communities by providing essential ecosystem goods and services. Occurring within the interface of land and sea, they serve as critical ecological zones shaped by dynamic interactions between terrestrial and marine systems.

Timber-steel-hybrid beams for multi-storey buildings [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
For modern multi-storey buildings timber-steel-hybrid elements present a very efficient construction method. The combination of these two materials leads to economic and ecologic benefits as the construction height can be optimized, the earthquake ...
