Age and diabetes related changes of the retinal capillaries: an ultrastructural and immunohistochemical study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Normal human aging and diabetes are associated with a gradual decrease of cerebral flow in the brain with changes in vascular architecture. Thickening of the capillary basement membrane and microvascular fibrosis are evident in the central nervous system

Mortality from external causes in Russia over half a century

open access: yesДемографическое обозрение, 2017
The article discusses long-term mortality trends (since 1956) from external causes of death in Russia. Russia has long lagged behind developed countries in this domain. The level of mortality from external causes of death remains high and its structure

A Bayesian geoadditive relative survival analysis of registry data on breast cancer mortality [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
In this paper we develop a so called relative survival analysis, that is used to model the excess risk of a certain subpopulation relative to the natural mortality risk, i.e. the base risk that is present in the whole population.

The Mortality Due to External Causes in Ukraine: Lives That Could Be Saved

open access: yesСтатистика України, 2020
The article’s objective is to assess the losses of human lives in Ukraine, resulting from the mortality due to external causes (by absolute number, rate and structure), reveal the patterns by gender and age, with distribution by main cause. A comparative

Imidazolium-based ionic liquids cause mammalian cell death due to modulated structures and dynamics of cellular membrane

open access: yesBiochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Biomembranes, 2020
Here, we report the toxic effects of various imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) with varying hydrocarbon chain lengths, on different human cell lines. Multiple biological assays have shown that the ILs with long hydrocarbon chains have stronger adverse effect especially on human liver cancer cells (Huh-7.5 cells).

Early postnatal ablation of the microRNA-processing enzyme, Drosha, causes chondrocyte death and impairs the structural integrity of the articular cartilage [PDF]

open access: yesOsteoarthritis and Cartilage, 2015
In growth plate chondrocytes, loss of Dicer, a microRNA (miRNA)-processing enzyme, causes defects in proliferation and differentiation, leading to a lethal skeletal dysplasia. However roles of miRNAs in articular chondrocytes have not been defined in vivo.

Determinants of Mortality in Russian Regions: an Empirical Analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The objective of this paper is to make an empirical analysis and econometric evaluation of determinants of mortality for population of the able-bodied age in Russian regions. The model that was evaluated included five groups of factors (economic, social,

Emergence of Anti-Cancer Drug Resistance: Exploring the Importance of the Microenvironmental Niche via a Spatial Model

open access: yes, 2014
Practically, all chemotherapeutic agents lead to drug resistance. Clinically, it is a challenge to determine whether resistance arises prior to, or as a result of, cancer therapy.
