Beam theory, including the assumption that plane sections remain plane, does not apply at points closer than the distance h to a discontinuity in applied load or geometry. This leads to the identification of discontinuity regions within reinforced concrete members near concentrated loads, openings, or changes in cross section. Because of their geometry,

Strut-and-tie model design provisions
PCI Journal, 2011The overall objective of the research project summarized in this paper was to develop simple and safe design guidelines for deep beams. To accomplish the research objective and related tasks, a database of 868 deep-beam tests was assembled from previous research.

SP-198: Structural Concrete - Behavior to Implementation, 2001
The evolution of strut and tie models is reviewed and their characteristics are discussed. From their evolution it is seen that more design effort should be expended on developing a reasonable truss than on refined calculations of nodal stresses and permissible concrete stresses. Strut and tie models are design tools.

Corbel strut and tie modeling – Experimental verification
Structures, 2020Abstract ACI 318-14 analyzes reinforced concrete corbel by shear friction (SF) and/or strut-and-tie modeling (STM). This work presents the results of experimental tests conducted on three reinforced concrete corbels that had a height of 390 mm and a width of 115 mm. The corbels had different shear span to effective depth ratios (a/d), which were 0.5,

The Preliminary Calculation Process of Strut-and-Tie Model
Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2013By briefly introducing the main steps of using strut-and-tie (STM) , this paper showing the preliminary calculation process. In this paper, defining D-region is the very first step in design. Then paper gives the method to calculate the reinforcement needed to meet required tie capacities.

Stress Fields for Nodes of Strut‐and‐Tie Models
Journal of Structural Engineering, 1990Truss models have been developed and applied to the ultimate strength design and detailing of two‐dimensional reinforced concrete members loaded in their plane. Such a truss is composed of struts and ties which represent one‐dimensional stress fields. The nodes, however, form two‐dimensional stress fields whose bearing capacity also needs to be checked.

Practical Design with Strut-and-Tie Models
Structures 2001, 2001Strut-and-tie models are an especially valuable tool for designing discontinuity regions (D-regions) of structures with irregular geometry where the flow of forces is not well known, like at points where high forces are applied to a beam, for shear walls with openings or for connections of members. The latter is especially important for highly stressed

Comparison of Stress Field and Strut-and-Tie Analyses
2018 4th International Conference on Green Technology and Sustainable Development (GTSD), 2018Strut-and-Tie and Stress Field Methods can be used for the design of discontinuity regions of reinforced concrete members such as deep beams, diaphragms, walls, brackets, areas around opening, anchorage zones, etc. Strut-and-Tie Method is widely used in today’s practice for hand calculations or it is frequently implemented in single-purpose programs or
