Mechanics of running of the ostrich (Struthio camelus)

Ostriches have been filmed running fast in their natural habitat. A female ostrich has been dissected and the principal bones, muscles and tendons in a leg have been measured. It is calculated that stresses up to 240 kN m−2 and 40 MN m−2, respectively, act in the digital flexor muscles and their tendons during running.

Macro-microscopic study on the toepad of ostrich (Struthio camelus)

The ostrich foot has four toepads, two on the 3rd digit, one on the 4th digit and one at metatarso-phalangeal joint. Previous studies have not detailed the histo-morphological structure of these toepads. Aortic rupture in ostriches (Struthio camelus)—A comparative study

Abstract Three ostriches ( Struthio camelus ) were found to have medial mucoid degeneration of the aorta at necropsy. Two of the birds had been fed turkey growers' pellets and in them the anterior aortas had ruptured, at sites free from atherosclerosis. Newcastle disease (ND) in ostriches was first reported in zoo birds in the 1950s. An outbreak of ND in commercial ostriches in Israel was reported in 1989, but of more significance were the ND infections of ostriches in southern Africa during the 1990s as a result of assumed spread from commercial domestic fowl.
