The importance of the social component of problem-solving activities in problem-based learning [PDF]

open access: yesNastava i Vaspitanje, 2019
This paper explores the ways in which problem-based learning is implemented and its effect on student performance. We conducted a parallel group study of primary school students in grades 5 to 8 to examine the effect of problem-based learning on students'

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Multiple Enrollment Policy: Survival Analyses and Odds of Graduating in at Least One University Degree Program

open access: yesTrends in Higher Education
Austria (Europe)’s university system does not allocate tuition fees to its students and allows for multiple simultaneous enrollments. This leads to students having different constellations between earlier enrollments, i.e., “pre-studies”, and their ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Religious practice and student performance : Evidence from Ramadan fasting

open access: yes, 2021
We investigate how the intensity of Ramadan affects educational outcomes by exploiting spatio-temporal variation in annual fasting hours. Longer fasting hours are related to increases in student performance in a panel of TIMMS test scores (1995–2019 ...

Effects of Kahoot! on K-12 Students’ Mathematics Achievement and Multi-Screen Addiction

open access: yesMultimodal Technologies and Interaction
Digital platforms are increasingly prevalent among young students in K-12 education, offering significant opportunities but also raising concerns about their effects on self-assessment and academic performance.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

School Finance Reforms, Tax Limits, and Student Performance: Do Reforms Level Up or Dumb Down? [PDF]

open access: yes
During the late 1970s and early 1980s, a majority of states substantially changed the ways in which schools were funded, either directly through court- or legislatively mandated school finance reform, or indirectly through tax and expenditure limits.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.
