Learning From Those Who Left: Student Retention at an Irish University

open access: yesJANZSSA, 2009
Retention research in Ireland is a relatively recent development. This article summarises the findings of the most recent retention research undertaken at University College Dublin in Ireland (Blaney & Mulkeen, 2008).

Student Retention Analytics: Modeling the Effect of Poverty on College Student Retention

open access: yes, 2023
ABSTRACT: Utility maximization theory is used to construct a rational choice model that examines the effects of the determinants of college student retention. The current research examines the impact that poverty has on year-to-year student persistence probabilities for freshmen students enrolled at a multicampus nonprofit private university that ...

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Living-learning communities improve first-year engineering student academic performance and retention at a small private university [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Living-Learning Communities (LLCs), in which students share a residence, one or more classes, and extracurricular activities, have been shown to improve first-year student engagement, academic performance, and retention in non-engineering fields ...

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Role of departmental support structures and self-efficacy on physics student persistence: An examination of students’ experience from 19 physics graduate programs

open access: yesPhysical Review Physics Education Research
Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) graduate and doctoral programs experience consistently high attrition rates. Moreover, persistent disparities exist in gender and racial representation.

A Review of the Contemporary International Literature on Student Retention in Higher Education

open access: yes, 2016
One of the major issues that concerns tertiary institutions around the world is the student retention rate. In general, higher rates of completion give more positive image about the academic, administrative and financial statues of these institutions ...

PICALM::MLLT10 translocated leukemia

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This comprehensive review of PICALM::MLLT10 translocated acute leukemia provides an in‐depth review of the structure and function of CALM, AF10, and the fusion oncoprotein (1). The multifaceted molecular mechanisms of oncogenesis, including nucleocytoplasmic shuttling (2), epigenetic modifications (3), and disruption of endocytosis (4), are then ...

The Killer Course Hypothesis [PDF]

open access: yes
Due to recent legislative changes, universities in Tennessee will receive funding based on student retention and graduation rates rather than enrollment. In light of these changes it is important that academics in all disciplines study retention rates in
