Each of three groups of university students for whom English was a second language, 24 Japanese-, 24 Hindi-, and 24 Spanish-speaking students, was divided into subgroups on the basis of efficiency in aural comprehension. All of the students recorded lists from an English-language intelligibility test and short segments of English prose.
