이 연구는 학교체육 운영에 대한 문제의식으로 시작되었으며, 그 원인을 탐구하고자 교사들이 공통적으로 경험한 대학 체육과 교육과정에 주목하였다. 이를 위해 내재적 접근으로서 문서화된 전국 초등교사양성대학 체육과 교육과정을 비교 분석하였고, 외재적 접근으로서 이를 경험한 예비 및 현직 교사들의 인식을 질적 메타연구방법을 활용해 탐구하였다. 내재적 접근으로서의 교육과정 분석은 교양, 교과교육 및 실기로 구성된 전공, 심화 과정을 구분하여 살펴보았다. 외재적 접근으로서의 교육과정 경험은 입학: 수렴되지 않는 학생들의 특성, 재학: 실제성에 대한 갈구, 졸업: 악순환의 고리로 범주화하여 분석하였다.
