Sturge-Weber syndrome: A review

Sturge-Weber syndrome is a rare disorder that occurs with a frequency of approximately 1 per 50,000. The disease is characterized by an intracranial vascular anomaly, leptomeningeal angiomatosis, most often involving the occipital and posterior parietal lobes.

Glaucoma in Sturge-Weber Syndrome

Trabeculectomy specimens from three eyes with Sturge-Weber syndrome were examined histopathologically. Changes in the trabecular meshwork-Schlemm's canal system were similar to findings in old age and in primary open-angle glaucoma. Two mechanisms for glaucoma are theorized.

Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) is a rare congenital neurocutaneous disorder characterized by the simultaneous presence of both cutaneous and extracutaneous capillary malformations. SWS usually presents as a facial port-wine birthmark, with a varying presence of leptomeningeal capillary malformations and ocular vascular abnormalities.
