Ageing criteria in the StarlingSturnus vulgaris
Ringing & Migration, 1991The reliability of various criteria (throat feather length and the characteristics of rectrices and upper tail‐coverts) previously suggested for ageing Starlings was assessed using a sample of known‐aged birds. Total length of the longest throat feather was the most reliable criterion in male Starlings, correctly assigning age to 95% (n=83) of birds ...

Micropuncture of superficial nephrons in avian (Sturnus vulgaris) kidney
American Journal of Physiology-Renal Physiology, 1982Single nephron glomerular filtration rate (SNGFR), fluid absorption, and tubule transport of sodium, chloride, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and phosphate were evaluated under control (2.5% mannitol infusion) conditions by micropuncture of superficial, reptilian-type nephrons of European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris). SNGFR averaged 0.36 nl .

An excitation-pattern model for the starling (Sturnus vulgaris)
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1995This paper develops and tests an excitation-pattern model for the starling. Like excitation-pattern models for humans [e.g., Zwicker, Acustica 6, 365–381 (1956); Florentine and Buus, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 70, 1646–1654 (1981)], the model for starlings provides a unified account of a large body of data. The foundation of the model is a critical-band scale,

Investigation of the aetiology of haemosiderosis in the starling(Sturnus vulgaris)
Avian Pathology, 1991Birds with haemosiderosis absorbed up to 10% of an orally administered test dose of radioactive iron, even when the hepatic iron concentrations were markedly increased. In contrast, rats which were orally loaded with iron to produce a comparable hepatic iron concentration absorbed only ' about 1% of administered (59)Fe.

Sleep pattern in the starling (Sturnus vulgaris).
Acta physiologica Polonica, 1986Electrographic and behavioural observations were conducted on two male and two female captive starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) under natural illumination conditions during autumn. Polygraphically sleep and wakefulness of starling were similar to those of other birds.
