Stuttering and quasi-stuttering in Ga

This report is concerned with an unusual stuttering pattern among the Ga. Ga is a tonal language and is a member of the Kwa branch of the Niger-Congo language family. Approximately 700,000 Ga people live in an area of about 500 square miles within and around the city of Accra, Ghana.

Neurogenic stuttering

According to reports in the literature and our own observations, which are reported in this paper, acquired stuttering may occur in conjunction with focal or diffuse damage to the central nervous system. When the lesion is focal, it may be in the right or in the left hemisphere.
