The mitochondrial genome of the land snail Camaena cicatricosa (Müller, 1774) (Stylommatophora, Camaenidae): the first complete sequence in the family Camaenidae

open access: yesZooKeys, 2014
The complete mitochondrial (mt) genome of the snail Camaena cicatricosa (Müller, 1774) has been sequenced and annotated in this study. The entire circular genome is 13,843 bp in size and represents the first camaenid mt genome, with content of 31.9%A, 37.

Why do snails have hairs? A Bayesian inference of character evolution [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Background: Costly structures need to represent an adaptive advantage in order to be maintained over evolutionary times. Contrary to many other conspicuous shell ornamentations of gastropods, the haired shells of several Stylommatophoran land snails ...

Use of the dart apparatus by the hermaphroditic land snail Polymita muscarum (Lea, 1834). [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Many species of pulmonate land snails are equipped with one or more so-called "love darts". Even though the number and shape of these calcareous darts vary considerably between species, dart use has only been investigated in very few species.

Phylogeny and biogeography of the Vitrinidae (Gastropoda: Stylommatophora) [PDF]

open access: yesZoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2002
The phylogeny of the Vitrinidae is reconstructed in a cladistic analysis based on characters of the genitalia, the copulation behaviour and the radula. The genera with an atrial stimulator turned out to be the earliest branches of the Vitrinidae, whereas the genera with a glandula amatoria form a monophyletic, taxonomically apomorphic group.
