Subduction invasion of the Atlantic by Mediterranean subduction zones

2022
<p>Subduction invasion has been referred to as the process by which subduction zones from a subducting ocean invade or trigger subduction initiation in a contiguous ocean. This can, in principle, happen in different ways that can vary from a direct migration by rollback along an oceanic corridor connecting the two oceans (e.g., the ...

Petrology of Subducted Slabs

Annual Review of Earth and Planetary Sciences, 2002
▪ Abstract  The subducted lithosphere is composed of a complex pattern of chemical systems that undergo continuous and discontinuous phase transformation, through pressure and temperature variations. Volatile recycling plays a major geodynamic role in triggering mass transfer, melting, and volcanism.

Devolatilization During Subduction

2014
Subducted crust refertilizes the subarc mantle wedge as well as the deep convecting mantle. In the subarc region, mass transfer occurs mainly through fluids, melts, or supercritical liquids. Experiments show that devolatilization reactions may occur at almost any depth in the chemically complex subducting lithosphere.

Subduction Zones Parameters ☆

2017
Subduction zones are characterized by multiple behaviors, dynamics, or geometries. Most of them results from the complex interplay between various parameters. In this article, we define the most common parameters used by scientists and then mention the studies where (set of) parameters are tested empirically, or experimentally.

Sediment subduction and frictional sliding in a subduction zone

Geology, 1980
New experimental data for the mechanical and thermodynamic properties of clays at high pressure and high temperature are applied to model the frictional sliding in a subduction zone. The model is believed applicable because of the large volume of pelagic sediments that appear to have been subducted with the oceanic plate along active Pacific margins ...
