Tracking Sediment Mixing Along the Lower Danube River From the Carpathians to the Black Sea

open access: yesTerra Nova, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We use detrital zircon U–Pb geochronology as a sediment provenance tracer in modern river sands to better understand how tectonic, climatic, and anthropogenic processes modulate sediment transport dynamics of the Carpathians to the Black Sea source to sink system.

Geothermics of the Apenninic subduction

open access: yesAnnals of Geophysics, 1997
The subduction of the Adriatic microplate is analysed from a geothermal point of view. In particular four main geodynamic units are distinguished: foreland, foredeep and slab, accretionary prism, and back-arc basin. Each of them is examined from a geothermal point of view and the related open question are discussed.

Forearc Depressions Develop in Warm Subduction Zones by Underplating‐Induced Crustal Flexure

open access: yesTerra Nova, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We propose a model for forearc depression formation in warm subduction zones. Forearc depressions overlie some ocean‐continent subduction zones and form between a forearc high and volcanic arc. Forearc highs coincide with 51–91 mGal free‐air gravity anomalies and km‐scale reflector bands in seismic sections, indicating they comprise crust ...

InSAR coseismic deformation and seismogenic structure of the 2023 MW6.9 Tajikistan earthquake

open access: yesGeodesy and Geodynamics
An earthquake of magnitude 6.9 occurred in Tajikistan on February 23, 2023. Studying this earthquake is the key to understanding the seismogenic structure of this area. The slip distribution of the MW6.9 earthquake was inverted using InSAR technology and

Orogenward Migration of the Flexural Forebulge: A Response to Increased (Sub)surface Loading in the Orogenic Core?

open access: yesTerra Nova, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The flexural profile of a foreland basin is controlled by lower plate strength and the magnitude of (sub)surface loads. Assuming that lower plate strength remains largely constant during flexure, changes in the flexural profile hint at reorganisations of (sub)surface loading.

Multiple Slabs and Complex Mantle Flows in the Molucca Sea Subduction Zone

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems
The Molucca Sea subduction zone is unique for its active divergent double‐subducted slab located in the north of the Java and Banda subduction zones. The spatial proximity of these subduction zones would cause a complex mantle flow field.

Buildup of a dynamically supported orogenic plateau: Numerical modeling of the Zagros/Central Iran case study

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, 2014
The Iranian plateau is a vast inland region with a smooth average elevation of c. 1.5 km formed at the rear of the Zagros orogen as a result of the Arabia‐Eurasia collision (i.e., over the last 30–35 Myr).

Exhumation as fast as subduction?

open access: yesGeology, 2001
We produced a pressure-temperature-time path in order to determine the exhumation rate of the deepest subducted Alpine rocks. In situ dating of peak-metamorphic titanite in an eclogite facies calc-silicate rock indicates that subduction to pressures of ∼3.5 GPa was reached at 35.1 ± 0.9 Ma.
