New X-ray observations of the hot subdwarf binary HD 49798/RX J0648.0–4418 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
HD 49798/RX J0648.0–4418 is the only confirmed X-ray binary in which the mass donor is a hot subdwarf star of O spectral type and, most likely, it contains a massive white dwarf (1.28±0.05 M ) with a very fast spin period of 13.2 s.

VLTI/GRAVITY enables the determination of the first dynamical masses of a classical Be + stripped and bloated pre-subdwarf binary [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics
HR 6819 is the first post-mass transfer binary system composed of a classical Be star and a bloated pre-subdwarf stripped star directly confirmed by interferometry.

New Variable Hot Subdwarf Stars Identified from Anomalous Gaia Flux Errors, Observed by TESS, and Classified via Fourier Diagnostics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Hot subdwarf stars are mostly stripped red giants that can exhibit photometric variations due to stellar pulsations, eclipses, the reflection effect, ellipsoidal modulation, and Doppler beaming.

Kinematics of nearby subdwarf stars [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2005
We present an analysis of the space motions of 742 subdwarf stars based on the sample of Carney et al. (1994, CLLA). Hipparcos parallaxes, TYC2+HIP proper motions and Tycho2 proper motions were combined with radial velocities and metallicities from CLLA. The kinematical behavior is discussed in particular in relation to their metallicities.

Envelope loss of RGB/AGB stars and the formation of hot subdwarfs

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2013
Low mass stars may lose their envelopes in the first giant branch (RGB) or the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) via envelope ejection (i.e. superwind). The envelope loss of AGB stars leads to the formation of carbon-oxygen (CO) white dwarfs (WDs), while the

Gamma Cas Stars as Be+White Dwarf Binary Systems

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters, 2022
The origin of the bright and hard X-ray emission flux among the γ Cas subgroup of B-emission line (Be) stars may be caused by gas accretion onto an orbiting white dwarf (WD) companion.

Diffusion in hot subdwarf progenitors from the common envelope channel

open access: yesOpen Astronomy, 2017
Diffusion of elements in the atmosphere of a star can drastically affect its surface composition, sometimes leading to unusual mixtures. These chemically peculiar stars can be identified fromthe presence of unusual lines in their spectra.

The EC14026 Stars — Pulsating Hot Subdwarfs [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1998
The Edinburgh-Cape Blue Object Survey (Stobie et al. 1997a) is a southern hemisphere survey to discover hot, blue stellar objects brighter than B=18 at galactic latitudes more than 30° from the galactic plane. The main categories of object detected are hot subdwarfs, white dwarfs, blue horizontal branch stars, apparently normal B stars, cataclysmic ...
