Limnological conditions in Subglacial Lake Vostok, Antarctica [PDF]
Subglacial Lake Vostok is located ~4 km beneath the surface of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet and has been isolated from the atmosphere for ≫15 million yr. Concerns for environmental protection have prevented direct sampling of the lake water thus far. However, an ice core has been retrieved from above the lake in which the bottom ,85 m represents lake ...

Repeated subglacial jökulhlaups in northeastern Greenland revealed by CryoSat
Surface height changes above three previously undetected subglacial lakes in northeastern Greenland are documented using CryoSat, DEMs and ICESat-2. Between 7 February and 6 March 2012, the central ice region (22.6 km2) above the largest lake dropped by ~

Determining Ice-Sheet Uplift Surrounding Subglacial Lakes with a Viscous Plate Model
We develop a viscous model of plate bending suitable for studying ice-sheet flexure due to subglacial lake filling and draining, and apply this model to determine the area of ice-sheet uplift surrounding a subglacial lake.

X‐ray CT and microscopic analysis of glaciogenic mud provide insight into the deposits of sediment‐laden density flows and reveal that strata comprise two microtextural motifs. The deposits of bottom‐hugging hyperpycnal flows and slope‐failure‐related turbidity currents are characterised by laterally continuous, sharply bounded silt‐rich and clay‐rich ...

Perennially ice-covered lakes that are tightly sealed from the atmosphere represent a unique group of polar lakes. In these lakes, the δD-δ18O evolution of the water column and steady-state conditions are controlled by rates of recharge and freezing at ...

We provide a geomorphological analysis of Cordillera Vilcanota and use morphostratigraphic principles to reconstruct palaeo icefield extent and palaeoglacier readvances, likely during the Antarctic Cold Reversal and Younger Dryas. We find evidence of temperate and polythermal ice margins, with limited glaciofluvial landform generation.

Entrained Water in Basal Ice Suppresses Radar Bed‐Echo Power at Active Subglacial Lakes
Subglacial lakes have been mapped across Antarctica with two methods, radio‐echo sounding (RES) and ice‐surface deformation. At sites where both are coincident, these methods typically provide conflicting interpretations about the ice‐bed interface. With

High‐resolution PlanetScope imagery reveals seasonal variations in proglacial lake area are underestimated by ~7% in moderate‐resolution data, while use of a single summer image can underestimate annual maximum area by ~2%. Capturing these seasonal variations provides valuable insights into the factors driving lake dynamics at Fjallsárlón, Iceland ...

Drilling reaches Antarctic subglacial Lake Whillans [PDF]
A decade‐long planning effort to drill through 800 meters of ice to directly and cleanly sample the waters and sediments of subglacial Lake Whillans in West Antarctica succeeded at 5:00 A.M. local time on 28 January. The effort “marks the first successful retrieval of clean whole samples from an Antarctic subglacial lake,” according to a 28 January ...

Seasonal Ice Cover Could Allow Liquid Lakes to Persist in a Cold Mars Paleoclimate
Abstract Geomorphic and stratigraphic studies of Mars prove that extensive liquid water flowed and pooled on the surface early in Mars' history. Martian paleoclimate models, however, have difficulty simulating climate conditions warm enough to maintain liquid water on early Mars.
