Characterization of glacial silt and clay using automated mineralogy

open access: yesAnnals of Glaciology, 2019
Glacial erosion produces vast quantities of fine-grained sediment that has a far-reaching impact on Earth surface processes. To gain a better understanding of the production of glacial silt and clay, we use automated mineralogy to quantify the ...

Inferring forms of glacier slip laws from estimates of ice-bed separation during glacier slip

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology, 2023
Sea-level projections depend sensitively on the parameterization used for basal slip in glacier flow models. During slip over rock-beds, ice-bed separation increases with slip velocity and basal water pressure.

Modelling Reveals an Ice Field on the Arid Northeastern Tibetan Plateau During Marine Isotope Stage 6

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 8, 28 April 2026.
Abstract The long‐standing hypothesis that an ice sheet covered the Tibetan Plateau during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) has been refuted. Further research has indicated that the Plateau experienced more extensive glacial expansion during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 6 than during the LGM.

Characterization of seismicity from different glacial bed types: machine learning classification of laboratory stick-slip acoustic emissions

open access: yesAnnals of Glaciology
Subglacial seismicity presents the opportunity to monitor inaccessible glacial beds at the epicentral location and time. Glaciers can be underlain by rock or till, a first order control on bed mechanics.

Modeling saline-fluid flow through subglacial channels [PDF]

open access: yesThe Cryosphere
Subglacial hydrological systems impact ice dynamics, biological environments, and sediment transport. Previous numerical models of channelized subglacial flow have focused on freshwater in temperate ice without considering variable fluid chemistry and ...

When the Past Matters: How Model Initialization Can Lead to Surprises in Long‐Term Simulations in Glaciated Environments

open access: yesHydrological Processes, Volume 40, Issue 4, April 2026.
Discharge simulated using the physics‐based, spatially distributed hydrological modelling approach varies during the overlapping period across different simulation lengths, attributed to model initialization and inability of state updating. ABSTRACT Hydrological simulations are crucial for understanding water resource changes and developing climate ...

Beyond Rock Glaciers: Investigating Meltwater Contribution and Water Quality in High‐Mountain Springs From Different Landforms

open access: yesHydrological Processes, Volume 40, Issue 4, April 2026.
We investigated the water chemistry of springs from different landforms in high‐elevation Alpine catchments. Only in predisposing lithological settings, springs from landforms most likely influenced by ice had a poor water quality with high dissolved concentrations of metals.

Reactivation of a Subglacial Channel Around the Grounding Zone of Roi Baudouin Ice Shelf, Antarctica

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Subglacial water beneath the Antarctic Ice Sheet is often funneled via subglacial channels, which inject freshwater into ice‐shelf cavities where it interacts with ocean water.
